Disney Worldbuilders Falls Short with Too-Brief Look at Theme Park Magic

Leslie Iwerks' latest documentary, Disney Worldbuilders, is a fascinating look at how Disney's best storytellers bring their ideas to life in the theme parks. The film consists of short segments featuring writers, directors, and movie executives who have seen their on-screen work become part of Disney's theme parks.

These segments are genuinely emotional and pull back the curtain on each person's personal and professional histories. They show how their own past and love for Disney contributed to their creative process and success before showing the feeling of having their projects manifest in ways they never expected.

The problem with Disney Worldbuilders is that it feels like a highlight reel, cut together from a longer TV series. At 58 minutes long, it's way too short, leaving viewers wanting more. Each segment is fascinating, but it's frustrating to be denied more time with the creative people featured in the documentary.

The only parts of the film that feel like commercials are the segments about former Disney CEO Bob Iger, which mainly point out his acquisition of popular IPs. These sections feel like they're there to promote him rather than entertain viewers.
