Disney World's Aging Monorail System in Need of Comprehensive Overhaul

The Walt Disney World Monorail System has been a staple of the resort for over half a century, but its age and infrastructure are starting to show. The system, which transports millions of guests each year, experienced operational disruptions in September 2026 due to issues with both the Express and Resort Monorail lines.

When one major route goes offline and another experiences an issue, the number of convenient options available to guests can shrink quickly during peak operating periods. The current Mark VI monorails have been in service for roughly 35-37 years, well beyond their typical lifespan of 20-30 years.

A phased shutdown of the Monorail System could allow Disney to execute a comprehensive modernization program, including the rollout of a next-generation fleet with improved climate control and propulsion. Upgrades to modern train control systems and rehabilitation of the beamways and electrical infrastructure could also improve operational flexibility and reliability.
