Disney World's Sold-Out Hotels: What's Really Going On
The Walt Disney World hotel inventory has been sold out for fan-favorite dates in late 2026, prompting reader fears about heavy crowds. However, a closer look at the data shows that this is not necessarily true.
According to the Walt Disney Company's financials, domestic Disney Hotel Occupancy By Year shows that occupancy rates have fluctuated between 79% and 90% since 2013. In 2022, occupancy reached 82%, and in 2023, it was 85%. The company's on-site occupancy is higher than the broader market.
VisitOrlando reports that Orlando occupancy was 66.1% in 2019. While hotel demand was up 1% over last year through June, weekly reports suggest a sharp summer drop, by as much as 7% in July. Disney's occupancy is based on available room nights, which means resort room inventory that's actually bookable.
Experts explain that the sold-out appearance of hotels is due to the way Walt Disney World manages its room availability. Special offers pull from different 'buckets' of room inventory that are more limited, and there's only so many rooms allocated to special offers. This means that availability for full-priced rooms will always be better than discounts.
As a result, visitors can still find availability by modifying their search to a subset of their actual travel dates or more than what they actually need. Booking last-minute often yields standard rooms at Coronado Springs, along with expensive and obscure room types elsewhere.
