Disney's EPCOT Lighting Nightmare Continues With Exposed Channels And Tripping Hazards

The multi-year overhaul of EPCOT's central hub has turned into an operational nightmare for Disney, with years-long problems plaguing the World Celebration Gardens' in-ground lighting system.

Despite its promise to usher in a futuristic era of entertainment anchored by glowing pathways, the park's central plaza behind Spaceship Earth has become an embarrassing failure. The original design featured programmable in-ground lighting embedded directly into the concrete pathways, arranged in geometric arcs surrounding the central planter.

However, sections of the light strips began malfunctioning almost immediately after opening in December 2023. Reports documented mismatched effects and sections going dark or failing to synchronize properly with Spaceship Earth's nighttime lighting. Electrical issues were only the beginning of Disney's design troubles.

The plastic protective covers over the lights warped, cracked, and lifted out of the ground, posing a tripping hazard for guests walking through the plaza at night. In an attempt to secure the lifting lighting strips, Disney maintenance crews used screws to fasten portions directly into the pavement in June 2025.

The current state of World Celebration Gardens has drawn attention from theme park observers following years of problems with the pavement lighting. Recent photographs show exposed channels remaining in parts of the area, creating uneven surfaces and representing a potential tripping hazard until affected sections are filled and finished.
