Disney's Free Cash Flow Takes Hit as Investments Soar
The Walt Disney Company is facing pressure on its free cash flow due to higher investment in its Experiences business and other growth initiatives. In the first nine months of fiscal 2026, the company generated $12.5 billion in operating cash flow, down from $13.6 billion a year ago. However, investments in parks, resorts, and other property rose to $6.78 billion from $6.11 billion.
As a result, free cash flow fell 24% to $5.74 billion. The investment burden is likely to remain elevated, with Disney expecting fiscal 2026 capital expenditures of approximately $9 billion, up from $8 billion in fiscal 2025. This increase is primarily due to theme park and resort expansion and new attractions.
Despite the pressure on free cash flow, Disney's investments are already showing signs of supporting growth. Third-quarter 2026 results show improving cash generation alongside this investment. During the period, free cash flow increased 63% year over year to $3.07 billion, while Experiences revenues gained 10% and operating income rose 20%.
Disney's strong theatrical pipeline also supports content investment, with its 2026 global box office surpassing $4 billion and Toy Story 5 exceeding $1.1 billion in September. The company has a fall slate that includes Avengers Endgame: Encore, Whalefall, and other releases.
