Disney's Iconic Characters Enter AI-Generated Wonderland

The Walt Disney Company has partnered with OpenAI to license over 200 of its iconic characters for use on Sora, a video generator that can turn text prompts into animated scenes.

Walt Disney himself would have been surprised by this development, given his emphasis on creativity and imagination. In an interview, he expressed concerns about the potential consequences of handing over control of his beloved characters to artificial intelligence.

Disney believed that technology should serve the story, not the other way around. He was known for pushing the boundaries of animation and storytelling, but also for maintaining a level of quality control that ensured his productions were exceptional, rather than simply 'good enough.'

When asked about the potential risks of AI-generated content, Disney noted that imagination requires creative risk and the choice of something new. Without limits or constraints, he worried that imagination would become an indistinct collage of possibilities.
