Disney's Layoffs Reach New Milestone Amid Industry-Wide Transformation
The Walt Disney Company has announced another round of layoffs, cutting approximately 300 jobs in its HR and tech divisions. This latest reduction brings the total number of employees let go since streaming cuts began in 2022 to over 10,000. Earlier this year, Disney eliminated around 1,000 marketing roles.
According to Dana Walden, CCO of Disney Entertainment, technology is forcing the company to adapt and evolve. In a recent interview at a Bloomberg event, Walden acknowledged the challenges facing the industry, stating that 'it's extremely painful' to see colleagues leave due to layoffs.
The latest round of cuts was described as a voluntary retirement program, which provided generous benefits to employees who chose to leave. However, it remains unclear how much AI automation contributed to the reduction in HR staffing. Walden expects continued layoffs across Hollywood as the industry responds to technological advancements.
