Disney's Lost Beastly Kingdom Expansion Revealed
Former Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde shared his insights on why the long-planned Beastly Kingdom expansion never materialized at Animal Kingdom. According to Rohde, four versions of the area were proposed before Avatar took its place in 2017. The initial concept for Animal Kingdom was to have areas themed to creatures from different eras and regions.
Rohde recalled that a radical new idea at the time was to create an animal-themed park with sections based on Africa, Asia, and other environmental regions. However, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner allegedly vetoed this plan, suggesting instead to focus on more 'famous' and established themes like dinosaurs.
The decision led to the opening of Avatar: Pandora, The World of Avatar in 2017, which replaced the planned Beastly Kingdom expansion. Rohde also shared that a temporary land called Camp Minnie-Mickey was erected as a placeholder for the site, but it eventually closed in 2014 to make way for Pandora.
