Disney's Mediocre Direct-to-Video Sequel Legacy Exposed
The Disney direct-to-video sequel factory of the 1990s and early 2000s churned out numerous mediocre sequels, midquels, and films cobbled together from shelved TV spinoffs. These movies often had low budgets, ranging from $3.5 million for 'The Return of Jafar' to a mere 90 minutes in runtime. The stories were lazy rehashes of the conflicts from the originals, with some sequels following the main characters and others focusing on their children.
The worst offenders included films like 'Mulan II' and 'Hunchback of Notre Dame II', which made the romances from the original Disney Renaissance films seem toxic. Even those that were somewhat enjoyable, such as 'Cinderella III: A Twist in Time', had a stale stench to them. The DisneyToon Studios, responsible for these movies, eventually shuttered in 2018.
