Disney's New Silverback Gorilla Undergoes First Wellness Exam
Bakari, Disney's Animal Kingdom's newest silverback gorilla, recently underwent his first wellness exam at the park. The 21-year-old western lowland gorilla was held by members of the animal care team during the checkup.
Guests visiting Conservation Station were able to watch the veterinary team through a window as they checked on Bakari's health. Walt Disney World President Joe Schott was also in attendance, praising the expertise and dedication of the animal care team.
Bakari is still relatively new to Disney's Animal Kingdom, but he's already taking on a significant role as leader of the park's family troop. The gorilla has been introduced to the female members of the troop, and the process is being handled gradually to allow them to adjust to their new dynamic.
Disney said that joining a family troop is a natural experience for adult male gorillas like Bakari. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan supports the introductions, which aim to strengthen the long-term future of the western lowland gorilla population in managed care.
