Disney's The Mandalorian Underwhelms at Box Office, But Still Brings in Big Bucks
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro acknowledged that The Mandalorian and its character Grogu underperformed at the box office, despite contributing to merchandise sales and driving theme park attendance.
The Star Wars series and the live-action Moana remake both failed to meet Disney's box office expectations, with The Mandalorian earning $81 million during its Memorial Day Weekend debut in 2023.
Although it went on to gross $345 million worldwide, this figure is significantly lower than previous Star Wars films such as 'The Rise of Skywalker' and 'The Last Jedi', which both exceeded a billion dollars at the box office.
In a statement, D'Amaro explained that these franchise investments have created value beyond their theatrical releases, with The Mandalorian driving growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise and attracting guests to Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
