Disney's Topiaries: Living Installations Built with Advanced Engineering Techniques

At Walt Disney World's EPCOT theme park, a team of horticulturists has been busy preparing for next year's International Flower & Garden Festival. The process of creating the topiaries that adorn the park during the festival is a complex one, taking around eight months to complete.

The topiaries are not just decorative elements, but rather living installations built using advanced engineering techniques. Each one requires a custom-engineered stainless steel structure, which supports the weight and shape of the plant material used to create the character's features.

Debbie Mola Mickler, area manager at Disney's Horticulture, explained that the team starts working on next year's lineup even before this year's festival ends. The process begins with selecting characters that can be translated into living structures, taking into account factors such as weight, scale, and maintenance.

Once a character is chosen, Mola Mickler uses digital tools to create a maquette, a small 3D-printed model of the topiary, which serves as the reference guide for the entire process. The team then works on designing and building the internal structures, including steel frames, moss growth medium, and irrigation systems.

The result is a topiary that not only looks like its real-life counterpart but also has intricate details such as folds in the character's clothes or bent legs to convey motion. Mola Mickler noted that the team's goal is to create an immersive experience for guests, making the topiaries more than just seasonal decorations.
