DLSS 5 Hands-On Tests Reveal AI Slop Backlash Might Have Been Overblown
Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology has faced criticism for its perceived impact on game visuals. However, recent hands-on tests suggest that the initial backlash may have been exaggerated.
The tech was showcased in a demo at Gamescom 2026, where it ran NBA 2K27 with impressive results. The demo sparked outrage when it was first revealed in March, with critics labeling it 'AI slop' due to its visible alterations of character models.
Nvidia representatives explained that the initial demo had all intensity sliders set to maximum, which exaggerated the effect beyond what developers would realistically use. The finished version, on the other hand, is tuned directly by developer Visual Concepts and offers more control over the final rendered image.
DLSS 5 will launch exclusively on GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs and GeForce NOW on September 3. Nvidia acknowledges that there is still a gap in photorealism, but the company's director of applied deep learning research, Edward Liu, says it remains 'a chasm' away from true photorealism.
