DoorDash Unveils Drone Delivery Service, Touts Quieter and Lighter Design

DoorDash has unveiled its in-house-designed drone delivery service, which it claims is quieter and lighter than Amazon's Prime Air drone. The company says its drone will launch in Northern California 'in the coming months,' with initial deliveries handled by Chipotle and Popeyes.

The DoorDash drone weighs under 55 pounds, significantly less than Amazon's 78-pound Prime Air drone. According to Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, the propellers are designed to be slow-spinning, reducing noise levels. In contrast, Amazon's drones have been criticized for their incessant buzzing during deliveries.

DoorDash's new service will focus on lightweight deliveries between three and five miles, with 80% of typical restaurant orders being light enough for drone delivery. The company aims to provide a more convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional delivery methods.
