Double Fine Reclaims IP Rights After Microsoft Split
Double Fine Productions has regained control of its intellectual property and publishing rights to Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln after separating from Microsoft's Xbox division. This change will allow the studio to receive revenue directly from these games.
The separation occurred on July 6 as part of a restructuring effort, resulting in the loss of 23 jobs at Double Fine. However, this development is seen as a positive step towards the studio's financial recovery and independence.
According to Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine, the IP and publishing rights for Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln have fully reverted to the studio. This means that Double Fine will now receive revenue share similar to what a publisher would obtain from these games.
The transfer process is still underway, with some storefronts still listing Xbox as the publisher due to delayed account transfers. However, this should change soon, allowing Double Fine to directly benefit from game sales.
