Walmart Stock Plunges 9% Amid Disappointing Guidance and Fuel Price Pressures
Walmart (NYSE: WMT) shares plummeted by 9% on their worst single-day performance since May 17, 2022. The drop was triggered by disappointing guidance and weaker-than-expected comparable sales figures. U.S. comparable sales growth fell short of analysts' anticipated 3.5%, coming in at just 2.6%. This missed mark is a significant concern for investors.
Net income also declined, dropping from $7 billion in the prior-year period to $6.3 billion for the second quarter of 2027. Additionally, Walmart warned that it expects to incur more than $2 billion in costs tied to elevated fuel prices. This compounds concerns about margin pressure heading into the back half of the year.
To combat these challenges, Walmart announced price rollbacks on 11,000 products. This move will be funded in part by approximately $2.9 billion in tariff refunds, a one-time financial benefit that will weigh on third-quarter results. Similar strategies are being deployed by rivals, including Target, signaling a broader trend in the retail sector.
