Double Fine Regains Control Over Its Games After Leaving Microsoft
Double Fine Productions has regained full control over its games and intellectual properties after leaving Microsoft's umbrella in July 2026. The studio, founded by Tim Schafer, was acquired by Microsoft in 2019.
Schafer shared the news during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games Daily podcast, stating that Double Fine now directly collects revenue from sales of its titles. While Microsoft remains listed as the publisher on select digital storefronts, platforms are still updating their metadata.
The studio's return to independence also marks a significant milestone for its game portfolio, including Psychonauts 2 and Keeper. Double Fine plans to revive its internal game jam, Amnesia Fortnight, where developers create prototypes for new projects.
