Double Fine's Tim Schafer on the Video Game Industry's Prolonged Downturn
Double Fine, an independent game development studio, has spoken out about its experiences during Microsoft's recent restructuring efforts. In a new interview, Studio Head Tim Schafer shared his thoughts on the current state of the video game industry and how it has affected both AAA and indie studios.
Schafer expressed confusion over the economics behind game development, stating that he hasn't seen an 'up' in the cycle for several years. He attributed this to what he believes is greed within the industry, hoping that it's just a temporary downturn.
When Double Fine was initially informed of Microsoft's plans to shut down some studios, Schafer was unsure if there were alternative options available. However, after learning about other possibilities, the studio decided to take control of their fate and has since announced a new game, Thank You Bus Driver.
Schafer also acknowledged that both AAA and indie studios face unique challenges in today's industry. He emphasized the importance of having a studio where creativity is valued above profit margins.
