Dow Jones Climbs 253 Points as Oil Prices and Treasury Yields Ease
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 253.38 points, or 0.49%, to close at 51,521.28 on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The gain extended Monday’s modest rise, supported by lower oil prices and a slight easing in Treasury yields. The index peaked at 51,672.25 around midday before giving back some gains, ending within a narrow range for the final two hours.
Lower oil prices and steadier bond markets were the main drivers. Brent crude fell to around $98.70 a barrel, while US crude dropped to about $87.80. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 3.6 basis points to 5.275%, and the 2-year yield dropped 4.2 basis points to 4.791%. Weak September jobs data also reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the 28 October meeting.
The Dow underperformed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, which both hit record highs. The S&P 500 gained 0.58%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.45%. The Dow’s composition, heavily weighted towards industrials, financials, and healthcare, limited its gains compared to the tech-heavy S&P 500.
Notable movers included Nvidia, a Dow component, which rose more than 1% after a record close. Outside the Dow, Constellation Energy jumped over 12% on a nuclear deal with Alphabet, and Option Care Health soared about 33% on a potential buyout. The Dow remains about 5.9% below its 52-week high of 54,744.33.
