Dow Jones Drops as Interest Rate Hikes Loom
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) had a mixed August, closing just short of 53,300 after a series of volatile sessions. The index started strong, opening near 53,500 and reaching marginally above that level before selling off to the 53,100 area.
However, it recovered around 150 points before the bell, with crude oil gaining better than 2% on the exchange and Brent holding above $90.00.
The index's performance was largely driven by Chevron (CVX), one of the few energy producers among the thirty companies in the DJIA, which rose alongside other energy stocks.
On the other hand, Goldman Sachs (GS) and Alphabet (GOOGL) led the decline, contributing to the overall downward trend.
The four-week slide has been attributed not to geopolitical tensions, but rather to a repricing of interest rates, with futures now pricing in a quarter-point increase on September 16 at roughly 60%, up from about 35% before Friday.
