Dow Jones Slumps 0.85% as Market Momentum Fades
The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 0.85% on Thursday, August 6, 2026, as market momentum faltered after three consecutive record highs. The index closed at 53,889.02, a decline of 460 points from its previous day's close.
Tech stocks bore the brunt of the selling, with software names like Adobe and Salesforce each falling 3% to 4%, dragging down the broader market.
Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com, attributed the decline to a lack of clear catalysts for the market. 'There was a painful lack of catalysts for the market to work with, eventually seeing market participants banking a quick profit in the absence of any news to push the market higher,' he said.
Energy stocks bucked the trend, however, as crude prices rose due to concerns around the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea shipping. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 1.20% to $76.12 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 1.70% to $80.80 per barrel.
