Dow Plummets as Bond Yields Climb to 5.50%
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted for the third consecutive day, weighed down by rising bond yields. The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.50% on Thursday, sparking concerns about inflation and interest rates.
New York Fed President Williams and Philadelphia Fed President Paulson both suggested that further rate increases may be necessary to combat inflation, which added to the market's anxiety. This sentiment was reflected in Sherwin-Williams (SHW), Walmart (WMT), and International Business Machines (IBM) shares, all of which fell sharply.
The Dow Jones finished at its lowest level since mid-June, with a decline of about 70% from its peak near 54,750. The S&P 500, on the other hand, remained flat, while the Nasdaq Composite edged higher, making the Dow Jones the only index to fall.
