Dow Plunges 571 Points Amid Sector-Wide Consequences

The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by 571 points to 52,843.47 on Tuesday, marking a 1.07% decline from its previous close of 53,414.25. The Nasdaq Composite fared slightly better, losing only 71.46 points to 26,435.53, but still managed to slip 0.27%. The S&P 500 dropped 0.35%, settling at 7,691.55.

However, a closer look at the market internals revealed that the losses were largely concentrated in a few specific stocks. Novartis (NVS) led the charge lower, plummeting 13.21% to $138.85 after two separate late-stage failures for its Lp(a)-lowering candidates. The failure of pelacarsen and del-desiran will likely have far-reaching consequences for the entire sector.

Amgen (AMGN) also suffered a significant loss, declining 9.01% to $397.83 as investors reassess their expectations for the company's Lp(a)-lowering candidate olpasiran. The stock's weight within the Dow is particularly noteworthy, as its decline contributed significantly to the index's overall losses.

On the other hand, Intel (INTC) rallied 8% to $103.61, while Oracle (ORCL) and Qualcomm (QCOM) also saw gains of 3.39% and 4.75%, respectively.
