The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 116.38 points on August 18 to close at 53,343.40, marking its third consecutive decline. The slump was largely attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East and a surge in global interest rates.

Semiconductor stocks were among the hardest hit, with Nvidia dropping 2.3% and Micron Technology tumbling 7%. This selling pressure was partly due to concerns that rising interest rates would inflate financing costs for AI infrastructure, making investors less willing to pay premiums for future earnings of technology companies.

The Strait of Hormuz closure by Iran also weighed on investor sentiment, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stating that the waterway would remain closed until the US fully implements a memorandum. This led to a surge in oil prices, with WTI crude futures reaching $84.94 per barrel and Brent crude futures rising to $91.02 per barrel.

The 30-year Treasury yield briefly touched 5.338%, its highest level since June 2007, adding pressure on tech valuations. Defensive sectors attracted buyers, however, with Johnson & Johnson rising 3.3% and Salesforce, Nike, and Coca-Cola each gaining more than 2%.
