Dow Surges 150 Points as Producer Inflation Drops Unexpectedly
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed by around 150 points on Wednesday, ending the day at 52,658.64. This rise followed the release of producer inflation data that revealed a bigger-than-anticipated drop in prices, boosting market sentiment. The CNN Money Fear and Greed Index shifted slightly to 46.3, maintaining a "Neutral" stance from its previous 45.4 reading.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also saw gains, rising 0.38% to 7,572.40 and 0.62% to 26,269.23, respectively. Producer prices fell 0.3% in June, defying expectations of no change, while the annual rate decreased from 6.2% to 5.5%. Core PPI increased by a smaller-than-expected 0.2%, reinforcing Tuesday’s soft Consumer Price Index (CPI) report and reducing the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike.
Leading the market movers, Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc. each gained about 3%, while Apple reached a new all-time high. Aehr Test Systems Inc. shares surged 22% after reporting strong fourth-quarter results and optimistic sales guidance for FY27. Morgan Stanley also reported positive earnings for the second quarter. Most S&P 500 sectors closed higher, with consumer discretionary, financial, and communication services leading the gains. Utilities and energy stocks, however, ended lower.
Investors are now looking ahead to earnings reports from UnitedHealth Group Inc., Abbott Laboratories, and GE Aerospace. The Fear & Greed Index, which measures market sentiment based on seven indicators, remained in the neutral zone, suggesting cautious optimism among traders.
