Drive Drops Photo Backup Sync with Google Photos
Google has announced that its Drive for Desktop application will stop supporting automatic backup of photos to Google Photos on August 10, 2026. The service-to-service connection between Drive and Google Photos will be terminated, but existing photos in Google Photos will remain unaffected.
Users who rely on the automatic backup feature will need to switch to backing up their photos through the Google Photos website instead of using the Drive app. This change is part of a gradual process and may not be immediately noticeable for those who miss the notice.
The website method, although less convenient than the previous automatic sync, is currently the only available option for desktop folder backups. To set up backup through the website, users will need to visit the Google Photos page, select the '+' icon, choose 'Backup folders', and then configure their selected folders for backup.
