Drone Industry Matures as Component Manufacturers Emerge
The commercial drone industry is undergoing significant changes, mirroring the early days of personal computing. At the recent Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, the exhibit floor featured a vast array of components, from propellers and batteries to docking stations and parachutes, akin to the early computer shows of the 1980s. This proliferation of specialized technologies suggests that the industry is becoming industrialized, with companies focusing on specific components rather than complete systems.
Unlike the personal computing era, however, the commercial drone industry already has a dominant player in DJI, which has integrated various components into a product that works seamlessly out of the box. This shift in value from individual components to integrated systems is transforming the market, with customers increasingly seeking turnkey solutions rather than assembling parts themselves.
While DJI's dominance may seem similar to IBM's position in the PC industry, there are significant differences. Unlike the open architecture of the IBM PC, which allowed other companies to develop hardware and software around it, DJI's designs have not become a de facto standard. The drone industry still lacks a universally accepted platform, with various manufacturers developing their own systems.
The next major breakthrough in the industry may come from the development of a standardized platform, where components from different manufacturers can be easily integrated into a single system. This would create a PC-compatible ecosystem, allowing companies to build businesses around it and transforming the industry's economics. Achieving this requires more than engineering; it needs standards, interfaces, communications protocols, data formats, cybersecurity requirements, and regulatory acceptance.
The transition to routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations could be a significant platform moment for the drone industry. Once BVLOS becomes standardized and scalable, drones will become less remotely controlled aircraft and more automated infrastructure systems, changing the market. Instead of selling aircraft to pilots or operators, companies can begin building systems around recurring operations such as inspection, mapping, security, logistics, and emergency response.
