Drought Could Spell Disaster for Britain's Butterflies

Experts at Butterfly Conservation in Dorset are warning that Britain's butterfly populations could decline significantly next year due to the drought conditions experienced this summer. According to Professor Richard Fox, head of science at Butterfly Conservation, a good summer for adult butterflies is not necessarily indicative of a healthy population. While high temperatures and sunshine made it an ideal year for flying, feeding, and breeding, the same weather patterns that benefited adults could harm their caterpillar offspring.

The 2026 Big Butterfly Count recorded strong numbers, with over 101,000 participants documenting nearly 1.4 million butterflies and moths across the UK. However, species sensitive to drought, such as the Speckled Wood, Green-veined White, and Ringlet, were seen in below-average numbers and have shown long-term declines of 44%, 54%, and 39% respectively since 2011.

Professor Fox expressed concern that the full impact of this summer's drought will become apparent next year. He cited previous extreme droughts in 1976 and 1995, which had severe impacts on butterfly populations, with some species never fully recovering.
