Duckling Rescue Unfolds During Firefighter's Home Improvement Run

A routine home improvement trip for North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Matt Klein turned into an impromptu rescue mission when he spotted a frantic mother duck searching for her lost ducklings near a storm drain in Pittsburgh.

Klein, who was headed to Home Depot to pick up supplies, noticed the distraught mother duck pacing back and forth near a storm grate. He quickly realized that five of her ducklings were trapped at the bottom of the drain.

The firefighter sprang into action, calling his colleagues for help before attempting to rescue the ducklings himself. Two of them were freed by Klein before the fire department arrived on scene.

With the assistance of officials from the North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department, the remaining three ducklings were carefully extracted from the drain. The last one was 30 feet down a pipe that led to another catch basin and had to be flushed out using water from an engine.

The department reported that all five ducklings were uninjured and have since been reunited with their relieved mother.
