Earnings Bubble Rises: Tech Sector's Growth Story Unravels

The 60/40 portfolio, a cornerstone of investing strategy for decades, is under scrutiny as market experts begin to admit that an earnings bubble may be forming in the technology sector.

Goldman Sachs' chief global equity strategist, Peter Oppenheimer, recently published a note conceding that while there isn't a valuation bubble, there may be an earnings bubble in tech. This comes on the heels of a week of Big Tech earnings that saw significant movements, with Microsoft experiencing a 17% stock surge and adding nearly $500 billion in market capitalization in one day.

Apollo chief economist Torsten Slok has also warned that the 60/40 portfolio is 'broken', citing the AI trade slowing down and government debt projected to reach 175% of GDP. He argues that neither the 60 nor the 40 responds to what made it work in the first place.

Oppenheimer notes that a regime change is underway, with the market seeing things change in a way they haven't since the Great Recession. The 60/40 rule wasn't always gospel, and its theoretical roots date back to Harry Markowitz's 1952 work on portfolio theory. However, it only became institutional orthodoxy during the four-decade stretch of falling interest rates that began in the early 1980s.

Experts are warning that the AI trade may be reversing or that markets may become more worried about government deficits, which could have significant implications for investors.
