Ecommerce Giants Clash Over Future of AI-Powered Shopping
Amazon and Shopify are locked in a silent war over the future of AI-powered shopping. The two e-commerce giants have opposing visions for how this technology will shape their platforms, with Amazon building walls around its customers and Shopify laying pipes beneath every competitor's.
According to their Q2 2026 results, Amazon wants to own the future of AI shopping by keeping transactions inside its ecosystem. Alexa for Shopping adds features like price alerts and auto-buy, while its Supply Chain Services draws brands into Amazon's network. In contrast, Shopify is opening its doors to outside agents, allowing AI-powered checkout through its platform.
Shopify's Catalog lists over 1 billion products, with AI searches powered by it converting at twice the rate of scraped data searches. The company's President, Harley Finkelstein, stated that agentic transactions carry the exact same economics as an online store transaction.
The two companies have different valuations, with Shopify trading at 147 times earnings and Amazon at 35 times with AWS as a cushion. Investors may prefer one over the other based on their growth expectations, but both companies are betting big on AI-powered shopping.
