El Niño Could Disrupt Disney World Outdoor Rides This Winter
A potentially strong El Niño weather system is forming ahead of winter 2026-27 and could impact Disney World's outdoor rides. According to NOAA, there's a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter.
The concern for Walt Disney World in Central Florida isn't that it has announced winter closures, it hasn't, but rather that El Niño winters historically lead to wetter and stormier conditions, which can temporarily interrupt outdoor attractions due to heavy rain or lightning. While NOAA explicitly cautions that even a strong event only increases the chances of El Niño-consistent impacts, it doesn't guarantee them.
Disney's own planDisney guidance explains that mild or moderate rain does not automatically close most attractions, while extreme downpours can delay outdoor rides and lightning can force outdoor attractions to stop operating. There is currently no basis to say specific rides like Test Track at EPCOT, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, or Slinky Dog Dash at Disney's Hollywood Studios will face 'near-constant' closures this winter.
A weather closure isn't just about losing one ride for 20 minutes. When an outdoor headliner stops accepting guests, demand can shift toward indoor attractions, dining, shopping, and other operating rides. Guests traveling this winter can reduce the impact of bad weather by avoiding an itinerary that depends on hitting every outdoor headliner in a narrow window.
