Emmys Head to Amazon Prime Video in 2027
The Emmy Awards are making a major shift from broadcast TV to Amazon’s Prime Video. Under a six-year deal announced Tuesday, the ceremony will exclusively stream on Prime Video starting in September 2027, with free access for viewers. This move ends the Emmys’ long-standing rotation among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, a tradition dating back to 1955 when NBC first aired the event nationally.
Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, stated, “Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share.” The agreement aims to reach Prime Video audiences in over 200 countries without requiring a subscription. The 2026 Emmys drew 6.8 million viewers, a 10% decline from the previous year.
This deal adds another high-profile live event to Prime Video’s lineup as streaming platforms compete for viewers. It follows last year’s announcement that the Oscars will move to YouTube in 2029. The Emmy partnership also includes plans for new fan engagement opportunities throughout the year, though details remain unclear.
