Emmys to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from 2027
The Emmy Awards, a staple of television celebrations since 1949, are making a significant shift in their broadcasting strategy. After 31 years under a rotating deal with ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox, the Emmys will move to Amazon Prime Video starting in 2027. This new arrangement will offer the ceremony for free to global viewers, aiming to create fresh ways for fans to engage with television.
The Television Academy and Prime Video highlighted the partnership as a step toward adapting to the evolving media landscape. They emphasized the Emmys' role in capturing global imagination and celebrating TV's cultural impact. The move comes as the Emmys have seen a roughly 50% decline in audience since the 2010s, though not as steep as the drops experienced by the Oscars and Grammys.
This shift aligns with a broader trend of award shows transitioning to streaming platforms. The Oscars will air on YouTube from 2029, the Screen Actors Guild Awards moved to Netflix in 2023, and the Academy of Country Music Awards switched to Amazon Prime Video in 2022. These changes reflect the declining viewership on traditional television and the growing influence of streaming services.
