EPC Group Issues Three-Week Plan for October 2026 Microsoft Deadline
On October 13, 2026, organizations worldwide face a critical deadline as three major Microsoft support cycles end on the same day. Office LTSC 2021 will reach its end of support, marking the end of technical support, bug fixes, and security updates. Simultaneously, the first year of Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) will expire, and the third and final year of ESU for Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will conclude. Errin O’Connor, Founder and Chief AI Architect of EPC Group, warns that the greatest risk lies in the overlap of unsupported systems: a Windows 10 PC running Office LTSC 2021 connected to a Windows Server 2012 file server.
To help organizations navigate this complex scenario, EPC Group has published a three-week triage plan. The plan begins with a comprehensive inventory of all affected devices, tagging each with its Windows version, Office version, and dependencies. The second week involves categorizing each device into one of four paths: migration to Microsoft 365 Apps on a supported Windows 11 device, deployment of Office LTSC 2024 for on-premises needs, purchase of Windows 10 ESU Year 2 for a twelve-month bridge, or retirement/replacement of outdated systems. The final week focuses on executing these plans in deadline order, ensuring that all decisions are documented for transparency.
EPC Group, a Houston-based Microsoft consulting firm with over 216 merger-and-acquisition tenant migrations under its belt, emphasizes the importance of accurate inventory and strategic planning. The firm’s Microsoft 365 License Optimization Assessment helps organizations avoid unnecessary ESU purchases and ensures that all devices are properly accounted for. For Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2, the options are more limited: migration to a supported Windows Server version, moving workloads to Azure, or decommissioning the systems entirely.
Organizations are raising several key questions as they prepare for the deadline. Office LTSC 2021 will continue to function but without critical updates, potentially exposing systems to security risks. Windows 10 ESU Year 2 cannot be purchased without first covering Year 1, and Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 will have no further ESU options after October 13, 2026. Additionally, devices must be running Windows 10, version 22H2, to qualify for ESU enrollment, highlighting the need for thorough inventory checks.
