EPCOT's Troubled Lighting System Finally Replaced with Concrete
Disney's World Celebration Gardens at EPCOT was meant to be a futuristic centerpiece of the park's transformation. When it opened in late 2023, the central courtyard boasted a majestic Walt Disney statue and glowing pavement display embedded in walkways.
However, within months, problems began surfacing with the high-tech lighting system. Sections malfunctioned, displayed incorrect colors, or failed to illuminate properly. The translucent protective material also warped, cracked, or lifted from its channels, creating uneven surfaces and potential tripping hazards.
Disney attempted various stopgap measures, including drilling screws into concrete and installing stanchions and rope barriers. Yet, the issues persisted, with sections continuing to lift and create problems for guests navigating the park.
In August 2026, Disney finally abandoned the troubled lighting system. Construction crews removed the problematic light channels and filled them with color-matched concrete, restoring a conventional walking surface.
