Escaping Google: One Person's Journey Away from the Ecosystem
The author of this article is slowly leaving Google's ecosystem and has found it easier than expected. They started by replacing Google Search with Kagi, a paid web search service that uses both Google's and Bing's indexes in addition to its own.
Kagi offers features similar to Google Search, but without the intrusive AI Overviews. The author is pleased with the results and appreciates that Kagi doesn't log searches or funnel personal data into ad networks. They are also paying for email using Proton, which provides a more private alternative to Gmail.
The author has not completely left Google's ecosystem, but they feel less tied to it than before. They still use some Google services, including their Pixel phone and Nest thermostat, but have replaced others like Chrome with Firefox. The author believes that paying for these services is worth the cost for a more private online experience.
