ESPN8: The Ocho Finds Its Home at Walt Disney World

The ESPN8: The Ocho festival celebrated its tenth anniversary at Walt Disney World's Wide World of Sports. During my visit on August 6 and 7, I was struck by how this quirky collection of sports felt right at home amidst the festive atmosphere.

The eclectic mix of events includes Donk Toss, Combat Archery All Stars, and Roofball, among others. What initially seemed like silly or niche activities turned out to be genuine competitions where participants approached their respective disciplines with dedication and enthusiasm.

A prime example is the origin story behind Roofball, which started as a backyard game in Beaverton, Oregon. The sport's creator, who had brought back a rugby ball from London, experimented with tossing it onto his roof and assigning points based on the outcome, until he realized that stray balls might disturb the neighborhood cats.

The connections and camaraderie among competitors and organizers were just as captivating as the competitions themselves. In the Fan Zone, I witnessed people of all ages trying out various sports, with Donk Toss and Combat Archery proving particularly popular. The sense of community was palpable, with participants eager to share their passion and enthusiasm with newcomers.
