Ethiopian Airlines Buys 10 Boeing Cargo Jets in $5 Billion Deal
Ethiopian Airlines has signed a deal to purchase 10 Boeing cargo aircraft, including eight Boeing 777-8Fs and two 777Fs. The airline's CEO, Mesfin Tasew, stated that they had the option to buy an additional eight 777-8Fs. According to Reuters, the catalogue price of the aircraft is $5 billion, although the actual price agreed upon remains confidential.
The deal marks a significant expansion of Ethiopian Airlines' cargo fleet, which already includes 12 777F cargo planes, three Boeing 767 freighters, and four converted 737s for medium-haul routes. The airline's total fleet consists of more than 140 jets. This acquisition is part of the airline's efforts to support its ambitious plans for Bishoftu International Airport, which is expected to become Africa's largest airport by 2030.
