Ethiopian Airlines Expands Cargo Fleet with Boeing Freighters
Ethiopian Airlines Group has expanded its cargo fleet with a new agreement with Boeing. The deal includes eight 777-8F and two 777F freighters, adding a total of ten aircraft to its current operations. This move aims to bolster the airline's cargo capabilities, fleet renewal, and network growth, providing additional capacity and operational flexibility as demand for air cargo services continues to rise.
The Boeing 777-8F, part of the 777X family, boasts a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes and is designed for long-range cargo operations. The 777F, also part of Boeing’s freighter family, will support the airline’s existing cargo fleet. Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, highlighted that this agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening the airline’s cargo capabilities and global network. He emphasized the importance of these new aircraft in enhancing payload capacity, operational flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability.
Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, noted that Ethiopian Airlines’ order for the 777 Freighter and the new 777-8 Freighter underscores the growing demand for air cargo worldwide. He expressed appreciation for the airline’s continued confidence in Boeing and its aircraft families. Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777F freighters, two Boeing 767 freighters, and four Boeing 737-8F aircraft, connecting over 70 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
The additional aircraft will further expand the airline’s network and support its cargo operations across international markets, reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and global markets.
