Ethiopian Airlines Expands Cargo Fleet with Boeing Freighters
Ethiopian Airlines Group, the largest aviation company in Africa, has taken a major step to expand its cargo fleet by signing an agreement with Boeing. The deal includes the acquisition of eight Boeing 777-8F and two Boeing 777F freighters, a move aimed at bolstering the airline’s cargo capabilities and extending its global logistics network.
The agreement highlights Ethiopian Airlines’ dedication to modernizing its fleet, improving operational efficiency, and growing its cargo business. The new Boeing 777-8F and 777F freighters will enhance the airline’s capacity to meet increasing demand for air cargo and support its long-term growth strategy.
Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating that the new freighters will improve the airline’s ability to serve customers worldwide with greater payload capacity, operational flexibility, efficiency, and sustainability. He also noted that the aircraft will play a crucial role in facilitating global trade and reinforcing Ethiopia’s position as a leading cargo gateway between Africa and international markets.
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, praised the partnership, highlighting the growing demand for air cargo worldwide. He expressed appreciation for Ethiopian Airlines’ continued confidence in Boeing and its aircraft, noting that the airline is the first in Africa to order the new 777-8 Freighter.
The Boeing 777-8F Freighter, the newest member of the 777X family, combines advanced technology, improved fuel efficiency, and extended range to set new standards in air cargo transport. The Boeing 777F Freighter family is recognized for its industry-leading payload capability, exceptional operational reliability, lower operating costs, and reduced environmental impact.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates twelve Boeing 777F freighters, two Boeing 767 freighters, and four Boeing 737-8F aircraft, serving over 70 cargo destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. The new freighters will further strengthen this network, providing greater capacity and flexibility to meet growing global demand for air cargo services.
