Ethiopian Airlines Expands Freighter Fleet with Boeing Order
Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its Boeing fleet with a new order for eight 777-8 freighters and two 777 freighters. This move combines the proven performance of the existing 777 freighter with the advanced capabilities of the next-generation 777X family. The order marks Ethiopian Airlines' second purchase from the 777X lineup, following its earlier acquisition of eight 777-9 passenger jets, making it the first African carrier to adopt the 777X.
The 777-8 freighter, set to become the world’s largest and most capable twin-engine freighter, will support Ethiopian Airlines' growing global network and enhance its international freight operations. The airline aims to leverage this new fleet to strengthen its position in the cargo sector.
Separately, MOL Ocean Bulk Pte Ltd has partnered with Vale International SA to transport iron ore using two tri-fuel ore carriers. The 25-year contract involves vessels equipped with a tri-fuel propulsion system capable of running on ethanol, methanol, and conventional heavy fuel oil. Scheduled for delivery in 2030, these 210,000-tonne carriers also feature an LNG/ammonia-ready design, offering flexibility in fuel options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in marine transport.
