Ethiopian Airlines Eyes Up to 10 Boeing Cargo Planes Amid African Expansion

Ethiopian Airlines is in advanced talks to purchase up to 10 Boeing freighters as it expands its cargo operations and establishes a new African hub, sources say.

The deal would likely include two current-generation 777F aircraft, bridging the gap until the delayed introduction of the new 777-8F model.

Boeing is under pressure to maintain production of the 777F, which faces an end-of-year deadline due to international emissions regulations. The company has requested a waiver from the FAA to deliver additional 777Fs beyond the current limit, citing strong demand and certification delays for the new 777-8F.

Ethiopian Airlines already operates 12 similar 777F cargo planes, as well as three Boeing 767 freighters and four converted 737s. The airline is also studying Airbus's A350F offering and has signed lease agreements with AerCap for two passenger planes being converted into freighters.
