Hidden Menu Reveals Pixel Users Can Get Google System Updates Sooner

Android users have long struggled to keep their devices up-to-date due to the complexity of navigating multiple update menus. According to Patrick O'Rourke, XDA's News Editor and Entertainment Segment Lead, keeping a phone current can be 'more complicated than it should be.'

O'Rourke recently discovered the System Services menu on his Pixel device, which contains critical services managed by Google such as Android System WebView and Google Play Services. He notes that these services are not only essential for the core functionality of the operating system but also crucial in resolving issues like Android Auto disconnections or crashes with specific apps.

However, O'Rourke points out that while Google claims these services are updated in the background when a security patch or OS update is applied, this does not always seem to be the case. In some instances, service updates drop ahead of Android updates, as he found on his Pixel 10 Pro and 11 Pro devices.

To check for System Services updates, users can navigate to Settings > All Services > Privacy & Security > System Services. While this may add an extra step to their update-checking routine, O'Rourke emphasizes that it is essential to ensure these critical services are up-to-date.
