EU Commission Orders Google to Share Search Data with Rival Engines

The European Union Commission has ordered Google to share anonymized search data with rival search engines under the Digital Markets Act. The ruling requires Google to provide better interoperability for companies using the Google Android operating system by January 2027.

Competitors of artificial intelligence services will have equal access to features on Google's Android devices, including AI chatbots with search features. This means that eligible third-party search providers can receive the same data used by Google for its services.

The EU Commission aims to create a more level playing field and foster innovative search services, which includes privacy-focused alternatives. The measures also include a formula to calculate the price of shared data, which the EU Commission calls 'fair'.
