The Boeing 737-7 has finally received certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after nearly a decade of regulatory review. The FAA granted an amended type certificate, allowing the smallest member of the 737 MAX family to enter commercial service.

The certification process involved over 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing, as well as extensive system safety analyses and human factors reviews. The FAA conducted or reviewed significant work on various safety-critical systems, including flight controls, system safety, and flightcrew alerting.

Before approving the aircraft, the FAA required Boeing to implement several safety improvements, including updates to the flight-control software, enhancements to the flightcrew alerting system, and a redesigned engine anti-ice system. The latter addresses a condition identified during flight testing that could weaken surrounding structures.

The 737-7 is designed to carry between 135 and 160 passengers in a two-class configuration and has a range of up to 3,800 nautical miles (7,040 km). Boeing claims the aircraft reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% and has a 50% smaller noise footprint than the aircraft it typically replaces.

The FAA will continue to monitor manufacturing processes at Boeing's production facilities and the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and safety culture. The certification marks a major milestone for the 737 MAX programme, with over 7,200 orders and more than 2,300 aircraft delivered by the end of June 2026.
