Boeing has cleared a significant hurdle in its financial recovery as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified the 737 Max 7 to enter commercial service. The milestone marks the first major airplane derivative to win an amended type certificate from the FAA in nearly a decade.

The certification process was a long and arduous one, with Boeing accumulating a list of required fixes for the aircraft over seven years. However, the manufacturer's efforts have finally paid off, and the Max 7 is expected to play a crucial role in boosting Boeing's cash flow next year.

According to figures from mid-year, the Max 7 makes up less than 6% of Boeing's 4,846 Max backlog, but its certification is seen as a major step forward for the company. The initial deliveries of the jets are slated for Southwest Airlines and will be followed by the yet-to-be-certified 737 Max 10.

Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing's commercial airplanes division, stated that this milestone 'puts us in a stronger position for the future.' While the certification is a significant achievement, it remains to be seen whether Boeing can maintain its momentum and continue to recover from the crisis sparked by two fatal 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019.
