FAA Gives Boeing Emissions Exemption for 777 Freighters
Boeing has received an emissions exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its 777 freighter, allowing the aircraft manufacturer to continue producing the planes beyond their originally planned end date of 2027.
The exemption, which was granted on September 16, will enable Boeing to sell up to 35 more 777Fs that are eligible for a Certificate of Airworthiness. The approval is a significant boost to the widebody freighter market, which was facing a supply shortage.
Boeing had requested the emissions exemption in December and had sought approval by May 1. The FAA acknowledged the 'practical benefits' of permitting limited 777F production until its successor, the 777-8F, becomes available. However, the 777-8F's launch has been delayed to 2028 from an original target of 2027.
Boeing recorded a total of 15 777 freighter orders and 35 deliveries last year, with 18 777Fs delivered to customers so far this year.
