FAA Grants Boeing Emissions Exemption for 777F Freighters Until 2031
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Boeing an exemption from emissions regulations for its 777F freighters. The exemption, which covers up to 35 aircraft, allows Boeing to continue producing the planes until its next-generation 777-8F freighter is certified.
The GE90 engine, used in the 777F, does not meet the fuel-efficiency standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) due to outdated design. The GE9X engine, used in the 777-8F, improves fuel efficiency by 10% and meets the ICAO standard.
Boeing's petition for an exemption rested on the fact that there is no other manufacturer currently producing a high-capacity widebody freighter to order. The company argued that halting production of the 777F would lead to losses in export value, with over $15 billion at risk.
