FAA Grants Boeing Reprieve from Emissions Rules for 777 Freighters

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Boeing permission to continue producing its 777 freighter aircraft despite looming emissions requirements. The exemption allows Boeing to produce up to 35 new planes from 2028 to 2031 while it works on certifying the plane's replacement.

Boeing argued that without the exemption, the air cargo industry would be disrupted and over $15 billion in U.S. exports could be lost. The company also stated that the entire 777 program supports 100,000 U.S. jobs.

The FAA found that the 777 accounts for only 4% of domestic freighter operations, but its introduction will raise fuel burn. However, compared to all commercial aviation operations, the new planes would still represent a small percentage of fuel burn, the agency concluded.
